Concerns about hormones have lead many women to avoid seeking estrogen therapy, resulting in thousands of preventable deaths, according to a recent study from Yale. An older study, published by the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) back in 2002, is responsible for this fear. It stated that hormone therapy which combined estrogen and progestin increased health risks. It now seems that progestin, a synthetic hormone, was the culprit. Newer studies from the WHI have shown that estrogen-only therapy actually decreased women’s risk of breast cancer and heart disease, but the public impact of these studies was not large enough to overpower the 2002 scare.
