Most singles over fifty years old believe they’re no longer at risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so pretty few of them use condoms. A 2009 AARP survey found that 32 percent of women use them every time and only 12 percent of men do. While it is true that the risk of STIs is about 90 percent lower for people fifty years and older than it is for twenty-somethings, the rate of infection among older people is increasing as people stay healthy longer and engage more frequently in penetrative intercourse than in decades past.
